Plan to Avoid Crises by Preventing Task Overload
If you’re prone to anxiety, you likely have a habit of overloading yourself with tasks and responsibilities. In fact, a common trait among those who suffer from anxiety is difficulty setting limits on the number of tasks they should or can handle.
And what happens if you’re anxious and overburden yourself with tasks? Anxiety can escalate to the point of triggering a crisis.
That’s why I’m sharing a plan to help you avoid crises by preventing task overload✨.
1. Minimize Sources of Distraction
- Turn off phone notifications.
- Find a quiet place to work on your tasks.
- Ensure the temperature is comfortable, not too hot or cold.
- Wear comfortable clothing that won’t distract you.
- Most importantly, quiet the mental noise in your head. Don’t know how? We can teach you.
2. Manage Your Energy
- Save complex tasks for times of the day when your energy is highest, usually after a full sleep or a long nap.
- Reserve simple tasks for low-energy moments.
- Avoid heavy meals during tasks, as digestion will redirect your energy from your brain to your stomach.
- Break tasks into small blocks with specific and focused activities.
3. Organize Your Time
- Determine your attention span threshold and stick to it.
- If you can focus for only 60 minutes, divide tasks into 60-minute work blocks with 15-minute breaks.
- Schedule at least one-hour breaks during long work sessions.
- If you’re a napper, avoid 30-minute naps; instead, take 10-minute or 60-minute naps.
- Use time management techniques like the Pomodoro method or create your own.
4. Channel Your Anxiety
- Manipulate a pencil while studying to redirect anxiety from your thoughts to your hands.
- Listen to non-distracting music that helps isolate you and enhances your focus.
- Snack on something small and healthy, or drink a refreshing beverage low in sugar and caffeine.
5. Techniques to Stay Grounded
- If anxiety begins to overwhelm you, take longer breaks.
- Practice breathing exercises to calm your body.
- Relieve tension with relaxing movements or light exercise.
- Rest! Feeling anxious will make you less productive, so it’s better to pause and continue later.
