Test to Know If You Have Clinical Anxiety Symptoms
This test will help you figure out whether your anxiety symptoms are common and normal or if they are clinical, indicating that you need immediate assistance.
In my professional practice, I’ve encountered countless anxiety symptoms, and while all of them cause discomfort, some are more severe than others. Let me explain why.
Clinical Symptoms
When psychologists refer to clinical symptoms, we’re talking about mental and physical manifestations that literally prevent you from living your life. These symptoms are so unbearable that many patients begin to consider self-harm.
In this article, I’ll provide a deeper look into the severity of anxiety.
What to Look For to Identify Clinical Anxiety Symptoms
- Intensity: Symptoms are so intense that they disrupt your daily activities, from the simplest tasks to the more complex ones (e.g., eating or sleeping).
- Duration: These symptoms are constant and uninterrupted. They persist day and night, weekdays and weekends, in any context (e.g., at home, in the supermarket, at work, or on public transport).
- Impact on Behavior: Because the symptoms are intolerable, people often resort to behaviors aimed at reducing them, such as self-harm, self-medication, physical aggression, or destruction of objects.
- Impact on Relationships: Symptoms make you irritable and sensitive all the time. You may feel misunderstood or unsupported, which leads to conflicts with loved ones.
- Impact on Physical Health: The intensity of these symptoms can lead to illnesses affecting one or more parts of your body—commonly the stomach or heart—eventually developing into chronic conditions.
- Impact on Emotions: Clinical symptoms make you feel diminished, incapable, unskilled, or inadequate, which significantly lowers your self-esteem.
Test to Determine If You Have Clinical Anxiety Symptoms
Now that you understand the severity of the issue, let’s proceed with the test to see if you’re experiencing clinical anxiety symptoms.

- Do you have difficulty sleeping for more than three consecutive nights?
- Do you experience episodes of binge eating, especially with sweets or fried foods?
- Have you suddenly lost your appetite?
- Do you spend hours completing simple tasks?
- Have you had panic attacks recently?
- Have you harmed yourself to relieve anxiety crises?
- Do you avoid leaving the house due to fear or nervousness?
- Do you feel intolerant, even toward harmless or simple things?
- Do you have constant stomach pain or gastritis, even while following medical treatments?
- Does your body feel tense, or do you experience unexplained pain? (e.g., clenching your jaw, shoulder, neck, or back pain.)
- Do you feel nervous just thinking about the future?
